Q+A with Demetra George

What brought you to astrology?

As a young woman my path led me through Mathematics, Physics, and Philosophy searching for the answers to the big questions of “Where have we come from? Who are we? Where are we going?” before arriving at the threshold of Astrology.

Why do you practice astrology—what makes it juicy for you?

Completely fulfilling, never ending intellectual stimulation and growth and the community of amazing and dynamic astrologers all over the world.

What is your specialty or focus?

The myths behind the planetary archetypes, asteroids, ancient techniques, translation and reconstruction of traditional astrology, history of astrology, feminine perspectives, teaching, tours to sacred sites that incorporate myth, astrology, and healing.

Is there a planet, sign, or aspect you’ve been exploring lately that represents an archetype or energy which feels important to you right now?

I have a fascination with Mercury (Greek Hermes) who embodies the paradox of the youthful, mischievous winged messenger as well as the magician, sage, and guide to the underworld. My translations of 1st century medical astrological texts are attributed to Hermes Trismegistus who was reputed to be the earliest author of astrology, alchemy, and magic in the Greco-Egyptian Hellenistic world. Mercury represents so much more than how we think, speak, learn, and communicate.

Are there any additional comments you’d like to make about your lecture/workshop?

I have dedicated 2011-2012 to presenting the fundamentals of ancient astrology to the contemporary astrological community so we can have more knowledge and respect for the tradition that we have inherited from our predecessors. For 2000 years, there was a system of understanding the chart that bridged the Hellenistic, Arabic, Medieval, and Renaissance periods. During the last 15 years this tradition has become available to us because of all the translations of our primary source texts from the ancient languages. It is thrilling to see the underlying rationale behind many of the doctrines and techniques we use, and it is this depth and profundity that I hope to communicate during the lecture and workshop.

From your unique perspective, how do you see what’s come forth recently with regards to the current astrological weather (e.g. Cardinal Cross)?

Uranus in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn–People asserting their will, protesting in the streets, fomenting revolution to destroy and transform the plutocracy of the unholy union of politics and corporations.
